Substance Abuse and

MICA (Mentally Ill and Chemically Addicted)

Alcoholism / Substance Abuse (ASA) is an issue that not only affects the addicted individual but their loved ones as well.  Substance Abuse affects all ages and demographics. Usually by the time you think there might be a problem, it's too late for someone to stop on their own.  The keys to ASA treatment are a desire for sobriety, addiction education and cognitive-behavioral modification and intervention.  The

CBT approach, assists the identified client obtain and sustain sobriety but also helps the family with issues such as enabling, co-dependence and boundary setting.

MICA (Mentally Ill and Chemically Addicted) clients have additional mental and emotional issues that cannot be ignored.  Their mental and emotional issue(s) must be dealt with before or simultaneously with the addiction. I work closely with psychiatrists and physicians  to ensure that the client is being treated in the best way possible, both medically and therapeutically .

Very often, individuals become addicted to substances prescribed by their medical doctor for conditions such as pain management and anxiety. It can be physically and emotionally difficult to wein off of these medications. This is accomplished by helping individuals identify the need, if any, to stop taking these medications, begin the process of weining (in conjunction with their prescribing physician) and develop coping skills to better tolerate their pain.
